Schwinn Easy Steer Tricycle (Red/White)

We bought this for my son's 3rd birthday. He has been too small for most trikes we have tried, but since this one has an adjustable seat he can reach the pedals with no problem. It's great! My husband has a bad back so the steering handle on this is a lifesaver. Every morning as soon as Quentin wakes up, he is asking if he can ride his bike. This is great exercise for his legs and will prepare him when he is big enough to ride his bike with training wheels. After two weeks, my son understands the concept of pedaling and steering at the same time. Quentin usually loads up both buckets with his toys and I put my house keys and cell phone in the little bag that is attached to the back of the seat when we take our walks. My 18 month old daughter loves to ride on it and he pushes her around, so the seatbelt comes in handy. This was so easy to assemble. The handle is easily removed, but for now we keep it in place just in case he needs a little extra help or his legs get tired. My only complaint is that the tires aren't pneumatic tires, they are plastic. I really did a lot of research before buying the Schwinn. I love the Radio Flyer name brand, but was leery after reading all the reviews. I am so happy with the choice I made.

Putting it together was fairly easy. The foot rest is great as my 18 month old cannot reach the pedals yet. However, we were not able to pivot the footrest to forward or retracted position. The footrest release doesn't seem to work. We had to unscrew the plastic caps and get the footrest to the forward down position and put the screws back. The seat belt buckle is a little flimsy. Not sure if that would last long. Apart from the footrest release and the seat belt buckle, everything else about this trike is great and of good quality. Walmart sells it for $59 and that's the best deal that I have found for this trike.

I was looking for a tricycle for my kid and wanted something made out of metal, not plastic. I've run across Schwinn and loved the design. It was easy to put it all togeter too, took about 15 min. It's very sturdy and durable which offers many years of use a big plus. Two storage caddies is a great idea, as I always have something in my hands and those are perfect to put your keys and phone so you can steer the trike without juggling stuff in your hands. The parent steering device is very sensitive and handy, it takes just a little turn for the trike to respond. And it's very handy for a kid who is just learning, so you don't have to bend over and walk along holding the child's handles. (That would give you back issues). Another good word to say is about the wheels, they are rubber, so they don't skid on a concrete, dry or wet. Safety seat belt is a great thinking too. Very good quality product.

My mom just got this trike for our son, and had her friend help her put it together. She said it took about an hour, even though he is extremely handy; apparently the instructions are difficult and the pictures don't match the steps at all.

Still, now that it's road-ready, my (big for his 16.5 months) son is beyond crazy about it, and it really IS easy to steer and detach the handle for transport (FYI, it fits fine on its side in the trunk of our Honda Civics). The kidlet wants to ride it everywhere, even though he can't quite reach the pedals, and I find it much easier to push and walk behind than our light-ish stroller. It seems to be a very sturdy, well-made bike, and my son is easily able to hold on to the handlebars and starting to learn how to steer after only a few rides. It does look sharp, and I think the black-red-white coloring is unisex enough that I wouldn't hesitate to put a boy or girl on it. We seem to get a lot of looks while we're riding/strolling around the neighborhood; I'm guessing the lookers are thinking it's a cool trike and idea, although I suppose they could be wondering why I'm pushing a young toddler around on a trike!

The big disadvantage vs. taking the stroller on walks is my son wants to ride the trike all the time. With the stroller, he's happy to ride sometimes and walk/"help" me push it at other times. So, right now, he's getting less exercise riding on the trike, but that should change once he can reach the pedals effectively. On the bright side, he can look around more easily and seems to be noticing more things in his environment, so he's getting more mental exercise. Also, the munchkin never wants to get off his new trike to play once we get to the park, and throws a fit over wanting to ride it every time we walk through the garage. Hopefully this is a novelty thing that'll wear off soon, but you may want to be prepared for your child to love the trike as much as mine does!

The tires are super on pavement and most grass, but I found the trike pretty tough to push on gravel paths today. That's probably the case for all treadless tires, though. It's fairly easy to pop the front tire up to maneuver up a sloped curb or small step, just as you would a stroller.

I don't have the manual, but I can't really see where the seat is truly adjustable. It'd be cool if it could go back and forth [more?] for smaller and larger kids. My guy has a longer torso and shorter legs, so those legs are going to have to grow a couple of inches to really sit on the pedals (yet he can drag his toes on the ground just fine due to the angle of the frame). I'd also like some sort of easy locking mechanism on the bucket in back because when I put a couple of 24-ounce water bottles in there, they can get dumped out on a slope. The easy dumping feature will be cool when my kid is older and fills the bucket w/ rocks or whatever, but right now it's a bit of a pain. Similarly, a brake for parking on a slope/hill would be wonderful, and it'd be lovely if the seatbelt pieces weren't so freaking difficult to adjust and clip in sometimes (however, said seatbelt IS sturdy and seems VERY safe and comfy, once you get it adjusted and on)!

All in all, some improvements could definitely be made from my perspective, but this is a great trike that I'm sure we'll get years of fun and good exercise out of. Like most of you, we did a lot of comparison shopping first, and this truly seems to be one of the better models on the market. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to our friends.

When we were shopping around for a trike for our 2 year old son, we wanted to get him one of the best. We bought the Schwinn Easy Steer because of the brand and the four star reviews. When we received it, we were very impressed by the quality of the product. It looked sturdy. We took it to a park with our son for a ride. On the second day of use, it started making an unbearable screeching sound. The trike was not subject to any rough use by our toddler. He was ridding it on a regular paved surface. We waited for a few days to check if the noise was temporary. We tried to oil the parts and check the fittings. But nothing worked. The screeching noise became more and more unbearable to the extent that our son started associating his trike with the "noise". He would point at the trike and say "papa trike noise".

We called up the seller (VM Innovations) and they offered to replace it. We disassembled this one, sent it back and reassembled the new one. But the new one started making the horrible screeching sound the first time it was taken out for a ride. Anyone who has assembled a trike or any elaborate kid product would know that it takes a lot of effort and time to assemble. Assembling a trike twice and disassembling it twice is not only time consuming but also frustrating to the extent that we don't want to consider buying a Schwinn product again in future.

We finally returned the Schwinn and bought a Kettler Kettrike for our son. He loves it and learnt how to ride it within a day.
