Cuisinart GR-4N 5-in-1 Griddler

Cuisinart GR-4N 5-in-1 GriddlerI bought a G4 Griddler from Amazon in 2005, and used it a couple of times a week (at least) until it had to be put out to pasture in 2010 due to failure of the non-stick coating on the plates. (The coating started to bubble and peel, and no one wants that in their food...) I loved it. (See my review of the Cuisinart GR-4 Griddler Stainless-Steel 4-in-1 Grill/Griddle and Panini Press) It was still working great, but replacement plates were not available.

I was elated when offered the opportunity to review its smarter younger brother, the GR-4NAM Griddler. I could hardly wait for it to get here and run it through its paces.

At first glance, the GR-4NAM looks virtually identical to the G4. However, closer inspection reveals that it has been totally redesigned, and for the better.

Improvement: The grease catcher used to be a little cup that had to be set under a spout on the side of the bottom plate. If it was positioned incorrectly, (or forgotten about), greased dripped out on the counter. The grease catcher is now integrated into the Griddler as a drawer-like device that can be pulled out to clean, and then put back in place for the next use.

Improvement: The original G4 had two sets of plates one flat set, one ridged set (for paninis). There is now one reversible set of plates (ridged on one side, flat on the other), and therefore no need to find a storage place for the plates not in use. The new plates have a good substantial weight. I don't have the old ones here for comparison, but the quality of the plates certainly was not cheapened.

Improvement: It used to be a little tricky to put the plates in place and to remove them. There was also a difference between the top plate and the bottom, so you had to be careful not to try to put them in the wrong way. The plates now have an identical shape, so they are interchangeable, and the release buttons activate a spring-loaded mechanism that pops the plate loose for easy removal.

Now, to see how it cooks: The Griddler takes about as long to warm up as a good-quality waffle iron. Just when you start to get impatient with it, it's ready.

The first thing that I cooked was a no-no in the eyes of Cuisinart a bone-in, skin-on leg and thigh chicken quarter. Too thick, they say. HA! says I, because I am a bit of an anarchist. I marinated the chicken in olive oil and rosemary, heated the Griddler to Medium. I cooked it on the panini plates because I love those little fake barbeque stripes across my food. It worked just fine. (I should have taken a picture, it came out looking beautiful. But I was hungry.)

Word of warning: Do not cook thick or fatty meat on High you will get grease spatters all over the place. Medium works just fine in such instances.

I discovered from my old Griddler that when cooking meat it's best to turn off the heat before it's done, and let it finish cooking with the residual heat in the plates. That way the meat does not get overdone.

For clean-up, I let the plates cool down, and then put a wet paper towel across the bottom plate and close the lid and let it sit for a while. The dampness softens anything that is stuck to the plates, and then it can be easily washed off with a sudsy sponge or dish wand.

Today for lunch, I made myself a sandwich with sliced sourdough bread, cooked sliced chicken breast, fresh grated parmesan cheese and dried basil. I followed the panini directions in the small cookbook that comes with the Griddler. Well, I sort of followed the directions... Cuisinart recommends brushing the outside of the sandwich with olive oil. I prefer to use melted butter on panini because it makes the sandwich crisper.

I preheated the Griddler on High, placed the sandwich inside, and applied light pressure for about 30 seconds, and then let it cook. The directions say to cook panini for about 4 -5 minutes, but my sandwich was ready to eat in 2 minutes. Maybe the butter makes the bread brown faster than olive oil.

In any case, it was beautiful evenly browned, crunchy and delicious, and I did take a picture (see product images).

How durable will the GR-4NAM be? Good question. From everything that I can see so far, Cuisinart has only made the Griddler better. But time is the real test of quality. I will report back from time to time regarding durability.

Right now, I'd say this looks like an excellent buy.

UPDATE, January 2011:

The Griddler is still in great shape. Granted, I am not using it as frequently as I did my original one, but that's because there are fewer mouths to feed in my household now than there used to be. I have no cautionary tales to add to the review. Hmmm... I think I'll go make a grilled cheese sandwich....

I have tried the Villaware Uni panini grill, the Delonghi open countertop grill and another panini type grill (approx $90), and returned them all (ouch, those return shipping charges hurt). I never considered the Geroge Foreman grills because they always felt cheaply made to me, not to mention many unfavorable reviews).

None of the grills/panini presses that I tried got hot enough to work well for me. They just did not grill as much as steam, bake cook the food, and they all took a longer time to do so than I was willing to wait.

I never was bothered by cleanup, though. I always just wipe the hot plates with wet paper towel, let it then cool a bit, and wash with wet sponge. Works on them all.

So I just gave up and bought some stovetop grill pans and have used them for the past year or so. They do get as hot as you want but you do have to turn the food to cook both sides.

Being a kitchen appliance junkie, I decided to try the Cuisinart Griddler this year.

I love the size (great for just 2 people, though) as I do not anticipate using it in the full open position. And it is handsome as handsome can be to me. Very commercial looking on a very small scale. (I was chef/owner of a restaurant for 13 years.)

And cleanup is easy. Although I still use the wet paper towel and sponge for immediate cleanup, the removable plates (very easy to take off and put back on) make washing in sink or dishwasher other options, Although the plates are nonstick, it is best to use vegetable spray or oil on the food (I prefer this rather than spraying the whole plate.)

There are 3 controls--griddle temperature selector, on/off to select either griddle or panini/grill, and panini/grill temperature selector. There is no timer so there is a small learning curve to learn when your food is cooked. Expect to overcook many things at first as the griddler really cooks quickly.

There's a short electrical cord, about 34" usable length. Solid construction. Hinged top does settle squarely on the food. Because there the griddler is flat with no slope like the Foreman and other grills, vegetables will not roll off or toward the front.

It takes about 5 minutes to preheat and then, wow, it really grills. Salmon took just 3 minutes. I overcooked my halved zuchinni in just a few minutes.

You can hear the instant sizzle sound but don't go to far away as it cooks more quikly than you might be used to.

We don't eat fatty meats (like burgers) so I cannot comment on the grease/drip factor but with fish, seafood, chicken and vegetables, there is absolutely no splatter.

It can cool down quickly if left open, a disadvantage while cooking but an advantage for cleaning.

Again, the most important factor for me was how hot the grill got (and quickly as well) This, of course, leads to perfect grilling on both sides.

I just love my griddler.

We have had this product for over 1 year. This product has a few of great features:

1. The interchangeable nonstick plates that are dishwasher safe.

2. The unit opens up to a large griddle.

3. The cooking plates are dishwasher safe.

However, the nonstick surface has started peeling off of the plates even though the plates have never been abused, and we have never used metal utensils on them.

Our biggest complaint is the thermostat. The unit will reach the desired temperature, and then turn off. The cooking plates will actually cool off so much that the food will stop cooking. The thermostat will then kick back on and take about 3-5 minutes to get back up to temperature. It is very annoying, and doesn't always produce good results with food.

There also is a large temperature difference between the two plates when the unit is opened as a large griddle. This causes items being cooked to finish at different times.

This could have been a great product, but Cuisinart seems to have gone "cheap" in areas that are integral to the function of the griddle. I would not purchase this item again.

We have had good luck with Cuisinart products over the years, so we decided to try this one, mostly based on the large number of favorable reviews here at Amazon. Clean-up is a dream. This product has an excellent non-stick surface, and even burned-on food comes right off with minimal effort. After reading the critique about the grease spattering all over, I tried a small experiment. I cooked salmon filets, marinated with lemon juice, dillweed and olive oil. No problem. I cooked boneless skinless chicken breasts, also marinated with olive oil. No problem. So then I brought in the Big Guns skin-on bone-in chicken thighs, marinated and cooked the same way as the breasts. It did make a mess. I cooked all of the above on High, however. The problem came from the fat in the skin, and the thickness of the meat the lid sits farther open, so more splatters can escape. How to solve the problem? Put a couple of paper towels on the counter, and cook the meat at Medium. Just with any kitchen tool, there is an effective way to use it, and a dumb way to use it. A little common sense goes a long way. I am extremely happy with this grill.

_____

Update: September 2008. I am still constantly using this grill it's a winner.

Update: February 2010: I had to stop using the panini plates because the non-stick coating was bubbling up and peeling off. Very disappointing, but we all know that this type of coating has a limited life-span. Given how much it's been used, I can't get too upset about it. Time to get a new one.

Improvements over previous model are the reversable grill plates that snap in and out very easily and now you do not have 2 extra plates to store somewhere. The grease catch pan is integrated into the bottom and removes very easily for cleaning. Cleanup is a snap: take off the 2 grill plates and they wash and cleanup so easy I don't bother putting them in the dishwasher. Clean the drip tray and you are done. Fast & easy.

I disagree with those that say it is great for cooking small meals or for a small family. It cooks the meat so fast, you better not walk away. First thing I cooked were good sized hamburgers & they were at 180° in 5 minutes. The next 4 were perfectly cooked at 4 minutes. Used the Sear setting per the instruction book with the grill preheated. New York Strip sirloins were done in 3 1/2 to 4 minutes on the Sear setting. Fast cooking & the meat is eye appealing with the grill marks on both sides. Batch number 3 will be pork chops tonight.

Granted, it doesn't quite do the job my Weber grill does outside, but when it is 15 below zero, the Griddler is very nice to have for indoor winter usage.

Great indoor grill, cooks fast, easy cleanup... I highly recommend it.

Cloud b Sleep Sheep On The Go Travel Sound Machine

Cloud b Sleep Sheep On The Go Travel Sound Machine with Four Soothing SoundsThis item is a WONDERFUL idea, and the on-the-go model is the perfect size for home (I don't know who would need the size of the original, larger sleep sheep it's enormous) and travel, but it has two key flaws:

1) there isn't a continuous play mode!! There are only two timed options, then the sound turns off. My newborn needed the sound maintained continuously to STAY asleep, not just to FALL asleep. Thus, we would have to keep pressing the button over and over, waking up ourselves when the sound would turn off to keep her from waking up beyond annoying.

2) the travel ("on-the-go") model does not have the heartbeat sound like the full size model does why? Otherwise, the sounds are the same as the full size model (waves, rain and whales). As the heartbeat is a KEY sound to have for a newborn, why on earth would THAT be the sound they substituted out on the travel model for a redundant "gentle stream" sound (could it be to get you to buy both sizes?!?)?

I gave it two stars because everything else is so wonderful and it has so much potential to be a fabulous product:

--the sheep is adorable, soft, and it is great to be able to hang it from ANYWHERE with the velcro loop. Plus, it is battery operated, which is a huge blessing (batteries are pre-installed, and are very long lasting we did not replace ours over three+ months of use).

--the way the sound "machine" is removable from the body of the sheep is ingenious. This way, you can wash the sheep and reinsert the machine when dry.

--LOVE the volume control: it's a dial, so you have complete control (not just low and high like so many children's products today).

--The rain sound is the closest to generic "white noise."

This product would be perfect with the 1) heartbeat sound in lieu of the 'gentle stream', which is redundant to the rain, imo, and 2)a continuous play mode.

Due to this, you are better off with Brookstones sound machine, which has not only timed settings, but continuous play, AND all the sounds you really need: heartbeat, in-utero (weird sloshing sound with "glub-glubs"), white noise, automobile and more. It's not cute and plush (and you have to plug it in w/ battery backup), but is WORKS.

For any parent who is raising a baby using gentle Happiest Baby on the Block soothing methods this "Sleepy Sheep" is a lifesaver. Babies really do respond to swaddling, being on their sides or stomachs, jiggling and "shush-ing" noise. We have used all of the white noises on this sheep and they all work to various degrees. We found the ocean sound to be closest to a parent "shssssh/shush" with breaths in between. Rather than shssssssh your lips off till your throat is bone dry, this Sheep does lots of the work for you and can be adjusted in volume for any ambient noise. Great item and did wonders for our little one's "4th trimester" She switches off like a light now when she recognizes the preparation and sheep sounds! Every new parent with a fussy baby should have this as a tool along with the Happiest Baby DVD!!! Great Item.

This is really a good product. Main thing it can play either 23 or 45 min. You can choose from 4 different soothing sounds. Also the product has a volume knob, so you can adjust the sound volume easily. There are good choice of sounds, our baby loves them all. Funny, but adults can use this item as a sleeping aid too.

I got this because the "Happiest Baby on the Block" method, which includes using white noise, has worked very well with our son. I wanted something that was easy to turn on and off that could be kept by the crib. He loves his sleep sheep! He has even figured out how to turn the sounds on himself. It has 2 timer settings and four sounds. It is also very soft. I would definitely recommend it.

Clearblue Easy Digital Ovulation Test (20 Count)

Clearblue Digital Ovulation Test 20 CountI have been TTCing for over a year now without success, expended time and money in IC's and never got a positive (I have long, irregular cycles after the contraceptive injection). I decided to invested in this product, the first month on CD33 and CD34 I got the smiley face, 10 days later I am pregnant with my first baby.

It definitely worth the price.

My husband and I just went thru our first round of IUI (finger's crossed) and was instructed by the nurse to start using the ovulation kit (of our choice) on day 10. After reading all the reviews, this seemed to be the easiest to use, and had the best feedback, so we went with these. On Day 10 cirlce. Day 11smiley face. We called the nurse and the next day they did an ultra-sound showing that I was in fact ready (ie. the test was accurate) and they went ahead with IUI. We're trying to stay very optimistic that one round is all we'll need (so think good thoughts) but if not, I have total confidence in using these for the following cycles.

I love the smiley faces on these no more comparing line darkness! I also like that these are the best deal I can find anywhere you get 20 sticks, and they are individually wrapped so you don't have to use all of them in one month like some tests require. I would definitely recommend these!

I'm a late ovulator it turns out. CD 22 is pretty absurd, but my cycles are long. It tells you to start testing on CD11. I started CD9 with other cheap sticks (though knowing I wouldn't O) just so I would be absolutely certain I didn't miss my surge. The cheapies are hard to understand. Is the line dark enough, not, etc. At Day 12, I started testing with the smile sticks TWICE a day and boy, I am so glad I did.

I would test between 10-11ish each morning and then again usually around 7-8 p.m. On day 21 I tested at 11:50 a.m., no smiles. I had no smiles until this point at all (makes sense). If I were only testing once a day, I would have missed the beginning of my surge! I tested again at 4:35 p.m. and what do you know.... smiles! Thank goodness I tested again!

I tested again that night at around 9:30 p.m. to see if my surge was still going (it varies per person in length) and still smiles! When I popped it out for the two smiles that day, the test line was getting darker. The next morning, I tested with another brand and the test line was much darker than the control line. Those smiles were able to detect my surge just as it was coming on... because now about 24 hours later, I was still testing positive.

The next morning (today) I used another smiley face and it was back to a circle...

Moral of the story: these work and detect early on in your LH surge without guessing if the lines were dark or not. SO WORTH THE MONEY!

Recommendation: buy the 20-count box and some extra cheapies so you will have something else to pee on when you get antsy. Also, test twice a day, otherwise you could miss the onset of your LH surge! Don't use first morning urine because it won't detect accurately when the LH surge started in your body since the urine would be there for about 8 hours overnight. Did it start last night or this morning, no way to know! Pee first, then take the next urine sample of the day.

My husband and I were on our third month of trying to conceive. I was going by an ovulation calendar, fertility friend.com, and OPK test strips. My cycles are longer, usually 33 days so I ovulate later. All of my ovulation symptoms aligned with the calendar/chart (I THOUGHT), for example my ovulation cramps started during that time, I had EWCM during those days, and my test line on the OPKs was usually bold. I was beginning to get concerned because I just KNEW we were making love on the correct days.

Going into our third month of trying I decided to quit playing the guessing game with those lines, they were driving me CRAZY! I broke down and paid extra for the digital Clear Blue Easy Ovulation tests. To my surprise, I was not ovulating until day 21/22! We were WAY off on our timing! Well, I am 6 weeks and 1 day pregnant my first month of using Clear Blue Easy Digital Ovulation! We could not believe it. There was also A LOT of praying going on so I have to give ALL the credit to my Savior. To sum it up, LOTS OF PRAYER and Clear Blue Easy was the answer for us!

GOD BLESS and always remember, HIS timing is PERFECT! :)

Optimum Nutrition 100% Whey Gold Standard

Optimum Nutrition 100% Whey Gold Standard, Double Rich Chocolate, 5 PoundAs a fitness enthusiast and a Science guy, I am always curious to find the real value of a supplement. What works and what does not work. More importantly, I believe the analysis of a product should be based on strong scientific knowledge base, combined with good old fashion practical use of the product, and only then one should come down to the final conclusion.

This product review and analysis was conducted based on 3 parameters

A. Constituents: What comes in the box, the real value of the product

B. Assimilation: How does this product goes down in your system, how much of it will your body assimilate

C. Usability : Long term usability and and effects.

I believe this is one of the best supplements available in the market today. The Question is Why?

1. The Quality of protein. Since its manufactured by Glanbia (who owns Optimum nutrition), this product is coming straight from the manufacturer. This is a BIG factor, 90% of the protein supplement companies source their raw materials from third parties, often importing them from third world countries.

100 grams of Whey protein isolate from one source is NOT equal to the 100 gram Whey protein isolate from another. Inferior resources usually have high level of Heavy metals and cattle Hormones. This has been elucidated from recent tests and published widely in the consumer reports. ON aced this report with minimum levels of such harmful residues. Reason is simple, they make their own whey in a plant which has to abide all regulations under US law.

Just for the point of reference. I am from India, and therefore know first hand how many poorly regulated cheese plants export their whey to Europe and US. So make sure your Whey protein is coming from Whey extracted in the US!!

The Additives

2. Ideally, I will prefer the protein powder with no artificial sweetener. But lets face it, such a product will be hard to sell. However, Golds whey keep artificial sweeter to minimum. If you check Bodybuilding.com forums, lots of consumer complain that its not sweet enough. I request all such folks to realise that is actually good for them, if you feel this product is not sufficiently sweet for you. Its better you use lesser amount of hydrant (Milk, water, juice etc), or add a tiny bit of Honey.

The ProfileThe Myth about Isolate vs a Blend

3. This might be hard for some people to digest. However, the truth is 96% people who use Whey supplements, will have no additional benefits of taking an Isolate vs a Blend. Please note, when I use the word blend, I mean a product lile Golds whey which is well balanced with Whey isolate and Whey Concentrate. (not any junk product form the market). If you take the blend, you might get 1 gram of extra fat or 2 grams of extra carbs which is absolutely nothing. You can burn this by adding 1.5 minute to your jog routine or walking for 2-3 minutes. You will get the same result and effect as the Isolate, so its not worth spending extra refined Isolate. The Isolate rumor is just a Hype created by the supplement industry. I will repeat this again, if your blend is as good as Golds whey i.e you are getting 24 grams per 30 gram scoop, you don't need an Isolate.

Who all comprise the 4% population who can benefit from an Isolate. First people who are extremely lactose Intolerant. I have used the word extremely since all good products add enzymes to digest the little amount of lactose residue in the supplement. Lactose is not a a bad thing, its simply the milk sugar. So if you are highly allergic to Lactose, Isolate will help (they have negligible levels of lactose)

Second tier of people who can benefit from Isolates are professional athletes who are pepping up for an upcoming competition. This competitive set is consuming 5-8+ scoops of Whey protein daily and therefore will benefit from reduction in additional fat or carbs.

4. Why go for Whey protein blend when you have specialized protein powders with Whey, egg and Casein.

Its simple science, Whey is just better with the best Biological value*. This means that your body will better absorb and use the protein source from Whey more than any other source, therefore no wastage. Egg is also a great resource, which is just behind Whey. However in real world it lags behind Whey substantially, even the delayed absorption rate cannot compensate much. Scientifically it has been proven that Whey is just better, since it doesn't tax your digestive processes as much as an egg protein.

Question of Casein:

Its true that Casein has an edge when it comes to delayed absorption. Its anti-catabolic properties and slow absorption makes it an ideal night time protein. This said, its best when you take Casein in concentrated from, i.e. if you need Casein, take only Caesin, do not mix it with Whey... Why do I say this, Its a big topic based on metabolism response(will add a different thread later). One last thing 24 grams of Whey protein is NOT equal to 24 grams of Casein as the Biological value of Casein is lower than Whey. However Caesin does have its own benifit of delayed response, provided you actually need it.

*Biological Value: Biological value (BV) is a measure of the proportion of absorbed protein from a food which becomes incorporated into the proteins of the organism's body.

Whey protein concentrate: 104

Whole egg: 100

Cow milk: 91

Beef: 80

Casein: 77

Soy: 74

Last Thoughts:

Always keep a note of how much protein you are consuming from Supplements Vs straight from the food. Ideally one should keep protein sources from supplements under 25%, but if your life style is demanding and you are unable to get hold of good meals rich in protein, you should always keep your protein dependency under 50%. In layman terms, for most of us who are looking for fitness, keep it not more than 2 scoops/day. For those who really pump some heavy Iron keep it upto than 3 scoops/day. (let me know if you wish to know the science behind this)

In the end Supplements are only Supplements. The word Supplement has a lot of Drama attached to it, as if, if you don't take a protein shake within 30 minutes of your work out.. you will never make good gain. Total Crap. This is not a make or break factor(its just beneficial). Baring few exceptions. Supplements adds up only 20 percent of your fitness equation.

In the real world, for over 90% of us. The fitness equation is something like this.

A Intensity and Regularity of Workout: 3035%

B Lifestyle and Nutritional Choices: 4050%

C Supplements : 0 20%

So the most important thing is to focus on A%B. Once you have maximized A and B, think about C

I like this product. Let me first start by saying that I do not think this is "the BEST" protein product ever. However, I've tried many protein products and this comes rather close.

In my honest opinion, "the BEST" protein product out there would have to be "Profect" by Protica Research. It's actually the stuff used by gastric bypass patients. It's 25 grams of high-absorb protein in only 2.7 fluid oz that literally tastes like fruit candy. But, it's way too expensive and a two-months supply can set you back a couple of hundred bucks easily. Because of this, it's better suited strictly toward its medical purposes.

This product is also not the "most cost-effective". There are plenty of other whey products out there that are much much cheaper and have just as much protein content, but they all pretty much taste like doo doo. What's the point in torturing yourself to save a few bucks? Cost is definitely an important factor, but not the most important.

Apart from all of the hype and apart from all of the hate, I would say that I really do like this product. It tasted a bit gross with just plain water, but when I added it to a cup of enriched soymilk, I couldn't tell the difference between it and a regular kid's chocolate milk shake. That is amazing. And this product did mix pretty well. I usually have problems with that when it comes to powdered shakes and it's always great when you can get a shake that doesn't just sit on the bottom of the cup and cement while everything else just floats to the top. I even added a serving of Benefiber fiber supplement, and it still didn't clump up.

One problem that I have with this product is that it does use artificial sweeteners, but I'll let that slide for now, since I don't intake too many products with them anyway. Still, it is a cause for concern for those you who want to avoid such things in your diet entirely.

Overall, 4 of of 5 stars. I'm pleased but not impressed. This product is definitely one of the superior brands out there but most definitely not a "gold standard". A lot could be done to improve it.

When it comes to a no non-sense protein powder, one that has extras such as glutamine and BCAA's, and at the same time has a minimal amount of fat and carbs...this is the protein to get. This isn't a meal replacement or should be used as one, if that's what your looking for try muscle milk which is high in protein but also other calories as well.

This is your post-workout protein shake plain and simple. I always add one banana either in the blender or just eat it separately, and when I'm in bulking phase I'll also add one tablespoon of peanut butter and bam, you have yourself a meal replacement too if that's what you prefer. Not to mention, its freaking delicious with the peanut butter!

One simple thing I have been adding to each shake is Citrulline Malate and Beta Alanine, Primaforce Citrulline Malate 200 Grams + FREE Beta Alanine Powder 250 Grams. My recovery time has literally been cut in half since adding this to the mix, also worth looking into if you are involved in intense training of any kind.

This is the best Protein powder you can get, no doubt and let me explain you why.

If you want a good tasting thing and that is your first priority then get one of those Wendy's or McDonalds's shakes. I mean, is that simple. Don't be so picky about the taste when you are consuming a Protein Shake. The industry has advanced a lot over the years and the powders get better and better with the time, so stop whining.

Now, if you still are into that taste and everything else comes second, then look for another product that has more saturated fat, more sugar, more simple carbs, less protein per scoop (less than the impressive .79 oz of Protein per oz of powder, a whooping 79%) and that is not 100% whey.

Don't get me wrong, I still think this powder tastes great, it's just not THE best taste out there (but who knows, maybe for you it is) but the benefits beat that. I have tried the double rich chocolate, the vanilla flavor, the strawberry flavor and the cookies and cream. They all taste good to me, especially if you know how to prepare them.

The amount of calories very slightly from flavor to flavor (no more than 10 calories per scoop) but let's take for example, the double rich chocolate.

1 scoop has 120 calories, 10 from fat, a minimum amount of carbs and 24 grams of Whey protein. In case you don't know, Whey protein is the most respected type of protein there is (with the white egg protein) since your body uses it entirely, unlike other types of protein that may become body fat if there's not enough physical activity.

The price is incredible too. Whether you are a weight lifter, body builder, somebody that wants to grow muscles or maybe somebody on a diet to eliminate that belly, you know how expensive food can be during the month. A Shake after workout there, a bar over there, whole wheat bread, fruits, etc. If spending extra money doesn't affect that's fine but if you sometimes have to take care of your personal budget then the price gives you another reason to choose 100% Whey.

I don't think there's a lot more to say here. This is the best selling powder and for good reasons.

And if you really need a good taste, then here are some recipes.

Prepare these in a blender, it's the best way.

1)Cut a banana in pieces and put them at the bottom.

2)Ice cubes, like 8-12 depending on the size.

3)2 scoops of double rich chocolate.

4)Milk. I prefer Soy Milk. It has some good fats and is better. 12 oz are more than ok.

Shake it until its ok. I'm not gonna confuse you saying "30 seconds" because some blenders do in 5 seconds what others do in like almost a minute.

Protein: 60-65 grams (almost 50 coming from the powder and more than 10 from the milk)

Calories: About 500 (The soy milk I drink has 100 calories per each 8oz glass, again look at the nutrition facts of your milk)

Calories from fat: About 60 (Half of them coming from good fats due to the soy milk).

Instead of the banana you can try rasberries too.

The cookies and cream recipe works the same as the chocolate recipe, plus the calories are the same. If you want a good strawberry shake do the same thing replacing the bananas with strawberries. Like 10 strawberries will be fine. It will have less calories since strawberries have less calories than the banana. Make sure the fruit is at the bottom, then you put the ice and after that you put the protein and the milk is at the end.

Enjoy.

This stuff tastes Great ( I've used both Double-Chocolate and Strawberry mixed in with Vanilla Yogurt or Milk ). My only complaint is that they are sweetened with artificial sweeteners ( Sucralose aka "Splenda" for Strawberry, Acesulfame Potassium aka "Sweet One" for Double-Rich-Chocolate ). Amazon does not mention this and it is not spelled out on the container itself ( only listed under ingredients with their chemical names). I'm concerned as there have been no long-term human studies conducted to determine the potential health effects of Splenda on humans. Until long-term human studies are conducted, no one will know for sure whether Splenda is really safe or unsafe for humans to eat. Unfortunately, used in a Protein powder, a person is likely to consume quite a bit of this stuff (3-4 servings a day for me). They have a Natural Whey product with no artificial sweeteners that I think I will switch to ( contains natural fructose instead ).

Into the Darkest Corner [Kindle Edition]

Into the Darkest CornerThis book by Elizabeth Haynes was Amazon's UK Best Book of the Year when it was published last year and has already sold film rights. It deserves to be a best seller in this country in July.

A quick no spoiler recap and a few warnings in this review.

The story begins with a transcript from a 2005 trial in the UK which the reader will be compelled to go back and read a number of times as they travel through this riveting story.

In 2007, Catherine Bailey is a woman inflicted with a severe case of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. She lives in fear of everything including but not limited to serious relationships. Then the story swiftly flashes back to late 2003 where Catherine is a normal business woman living a normal live but seeking to find the right man to fulfill her life.

Every few pages the story moves back and forth through these time phases as the writer fills in numerous gaps to explain how this normal woman became one who epitomizes OCD.

In each of these time frames, Catherine becomes involved with a man. These two men, one a mysterious man with hidden motives and one a doctor who takes a serious interest in her for various reasons are vital parts of this fascinating story. She has no parents so her female friends and a sympathetic police woman also become major elements of her life.

A few warnings. This is a story of violent physical and mental abuse. It incorporates rape and other methods of physical and sexual torture. In many other books these types of plot turns would simply be for sensationalism. In this incredible tale, these plot turns are vital and fundamental to the story that Haynes is telling.

This is a long book (about 400 pages) and at around page 250, I was thinking I had already learned more about OCD than I ever wanted to know. Also the plot seemed to slow down and some of the elements became repetitive. However, the last 100+ pages are stunning and page turning. All of the previous pages then become more important to understand each and every dramatic twist that occurs. And actually one walks away with a strong perspective about OCD and some of the causes and effects and potential cures.

Some may criticize the conclusion as predicable and cinematic but stay tuned to the last pages to understand what separates "Into the Darkest Corner" from other novels of violent relationships. The reader will walk with a better understanding of how women deal with abuse in their lives. This book is worth reading by women and men as the story imparts some valuable lessons.

It's a first novel by this marvelous and creative writer and she is a name to be reckoned with! Order it in advance and be prepared for a few late Summer nights of valuable and unforgettable reading.

This book may be different from any book you'll read this year. It's harsh and gripping. It alternates chapters between two different time periods but with each one you feel you're on a roller coaster heading for disaster.

Catherine Bailey starts out as a happy, carefree young woman enjoying herself and her friends. But she meets the wrong man and slowly becomes a person who is terrorized and almost killed. The descriptions of OCD are gripping. Her fear jumps off the pages and the reader is carried along with it. Sometimes I had to put the book down to come back to my own safe reality.

This book is not for faint at heart but it is a very good book. And the ending leaves you thinking.

In The Darkest Corner is a layered suspense novel that will scare you to death. What's so frightening about Darkest Corner is that it can and does happen to people every day. Who wouldn't be attractive to a drop-dead gorgeous man who's absolutely obsessed with you? Who isn't looking for the perfect mate, who cares where you are all the time? Who cares what you wear to the point of distraction? Who makes all your friends green with envy?

And what happens when that obsession turns frightening instead of flattering? Haynes has written an amazing debut novel that will keep her readers up far into the night as they try not to see similar behavior to Lee Brightman in their own mates. A character worthy of the plucky heroine, Cathy Bailey, Lee is the perfect date when she first meets him. Physically perfect right down to his clear blue eyes and golden blonde hair, Lee makes Cathy the envy of all of her friends. The relationship starts out perfect. Lee is the kind of man Cathy's been looking for all her life, until little things start to happen. Maybe the sex was a little rough one time, or maybe Lee is a little tiring about the red silk dress he's first seen Cathy in, insisting she wear it would be inappropriate to do so.

With the line between falling in love and obsession so thin, Cathy doubts herself when she starts to think that Lee might not be so perfect after all. When she tries to tell her friends, they brush her off, doubtless because they wish they had a man was perfect of their own.

While there are many books that follow the same sort of plotting, what sets Darkest Corner apart is Cathy's Obsessive Compulsion Disorder(OCD). Funny when you think about it, she comes down with a disorder that causes her to check the locks on her house to the point of ruining her life, when it's Lee's obsessive behavior that causes the disorder in the first place. Maybe OCD should be labeled Obsessive Compulsive Behavior Caused By Some Jerk With Serious Mental Issues, but that might be too many initials. Getting rid of the idea that someone a person just comes down with crazy coping mechanisms.

OCD is mapped out carefully in Darkest Corner, and shows how it can be overcome, something that sets this book above the usual run-of-the-mill girl being stalked by crazy boyfriend. Also, the time line goes back and forth between before Cathy's near murder by Lee, and her coping with her OCD afterwards. Great plot device.

I really liked this book because unlike other books where a woman is abused and then rescued, Darkest Corner shows the heroine going into the deepest corners of her own shadow side and finding the strength to make it back out to the light. How Cathy was chosen by Lee probably because her parents were dead, leaving her with only her girlfriends for backup, and that didn't turn out well.

Great book to have on a plane, or to give to the girlfriends knowing how much it will spook them. And who doesn't like to be the first to discover a new author?

This novel alternates between the past when Cathy meets a handsome, charismatic man, Lee and begins a relationship with him that quickly turns violent and controlling -to the present when she has OCD and post-tramautic stress syndrome and tries to start a relationship with a new man.

This story has been told many times before and there is really nothing new here. Even more disappointing was that there were so many things that I just didn't buy. I really didn't buy that all her friends that she had known for years would not believe or help her when she told them about Lee--and also that Cathy allowed herself to be such a victim. In the present, I really didn't see what these men saw in her . . . I mean unless she was so breathtakingly beautiful or something, why did Stuart and his friend think she was so wonderful . . . wonderful enough that Stuart would put up with all of her weird behaviors and keep pursuing her. Also, I can't believe that Stuart kept pooh-poohing her concerns when strange things are happening in the their apartment building, when he knew that her psycho boyfriend had been released from prison. But most of all, I found Cathy to be very weak and unlikeable and when she finally does decide to stand up for herself, she does it so stupidly that I still don't think much of her.

I gave this book three stars because it did keep me interested enough that I finished the book.

I know I am about to rack up on the "No, this was not helpful" review clicks, but I want to be honest. Here it goes.

I wasn't crazy about this book. Did it grip me, yes. Did I read it quickly and stay interested the whole time, yes. I just did not care for the heroine. She was just not that likable to me. She starts off a party girl who sleeps around and drinks so much that she admits that she doesn't remember a lot of it. Her parents have died, so I guess that is her reason for that behavior. It, unfortunately, made me just not care for her that much. All she does is party and sleep with people in the first part of the book. I have read about party girls before, but somehow they come off better than this heroine did. When the hero starts to fall for her, I kept wondering why. Even when she is somewhat better managing her OCD, I wondered why does he like her? Another issue that I had was her friends. NO ONE believes her. Are you kidding me? Not one friend feels the need to really look into her claims? That bothered me. The switching back and forth between times did bother me at first, but once I realized there was a pattern, it was no big deal.

As far as good things, the author does shine in some spots. I thought it was an interesting look at OCD and PTSD. The author did a fabulous job of describing how a person with these symptoms would live. You can feel the heroine's panic and need for the routines. The way the author explains the reasons behind all the little quirks helps to make you see how someone cold easily fall into an OCD tendency. The mystery itself was pretty good. I kept thinking about the movie "Sleeping With the Enemy" because they are somewhat similar. Again, the heroine was just more likable in that movie.

Don't get me wrong, this is a very compelling book. I wanted to keep reading, but I felt I could have enjoyed it even more.

Prismacolor Premier Colored Pencils, 24 Assorted Color Pencils

Prismacolor Premier Colored Pencils, 24 Assorted Color PencilsThere are many excellent colored pencil brands available today, with some of the premier labels being Caran D'Arche (Switzerland), Conté (France), Faber Castell (Germany), Talens (the Netherlands) and Koh-i-noor (Czech Republic). Each pencil brand has its own loyal following, and it is certainly true that the performance characteristics of each leaves a unique "signature" on paper (i.e., the experienced eye can sometimes tell which brand of pencil was used for a different piece of artwork by examining luminosity, reflection, depth of color, and others). I have used all these brands myself, having brought back from Europe entire sets from various manufacturers, and often in different sub types ("artist," "student," and so on). Some also have added touches that really make a pencil set shine, including rounded triangular shafts with subtle inlaid grips, bonded coatings between the lead and the pencil wood to minimize lead shattering, and soft textured surfaces for improved gripping and comfort. Some sets are now even beginning to adhere to the lightfastness specifications as developed by the Colored Pencil Society of America.

So, what should we think about a set of American made colored pencils when they are competing with these premier brands, some of which have been in business for centuries? The answer might be surprising to hear: after using all these brands for an extended period of time, I can say that these Prismacolor "Premier" pencils easily hold their own against the world's best colored pencils.

What are the characteristics of the Prismacolor "Premier" pencils that make them so good?

1. Smooth, silky, and rich laydown of color

2. Little smearing, even when laying down dense patches of color

3. Ability to blend colors as needed

4. Wide range of available colors

5. Relatively inexpensive (by comparison to other premium brands)

6. Availability of the Prismacolor "Verithin" pencil sets, which duplicate the colors of the "Premier" line pencil by pencil (matched by color codes), but in an extremely hard lead that permits a high level of sharpening for detail work which will not quickly wear down.

At first glance, it might seem that these Prisamacolor pencils are expensive, but when one reflects on the fact that some of the more "esoteric" (for lack of a better word) pencils can run upwards of $3 $4 per pencil, the Prismacolors are nothing short of a bargain. (If you hunt long enough, you can even find the large set of 120 pencils that comes in a two tiered wood case with lining to house your collection and you'll still be paying far less per pencil than other high end brands.)

But the proof is certainly in the putting. Get one of these in your hands, and lay down some color on a sheet of paper and see if you don't experience the very thing I am describing here. These are rich and smooth leads with an almost creamy feel. That's not to say you can point them up to a needle: you can, but you just must be careful not to press too much when doing so in order to keep the point from breaking. You can also use these in a duller point to lay down large swaths of rich, deep color. (Again, pairing this set up with the "Verithin" set can be very helpful for detail work.)

Are these pencils perfect? No. There are a few issues, some minor, but nevertheless relevant for this review:

1. Lead shattering seems to be an issue for the company. My first set had no less than 10% of the pencils shattered all the way down to the end, rendering all those colors useless. This is either manufacturing problems, or some improvement in the cases in which the pencils are transported and sold is required to further reduce shock from transport. It is an unacceptable result when purchasing a large pencil set.

2. Along those same lines, it would be wonderful if Prismacolor could look into a similar technology such as Staedler uses in its colored pencils, which is a coating of inner material between the lead and the wood to reduce breakage. I've never had a single Staedler pencil break on me yet. Not one.

3. The triangular shaped shafts of both the Faber Castell and Staedler pencils is in my view a superior design than the round format of the Primscolors, allowing greater control and improved comfort.

4. The Prismacolors do not use any type of friction coating on the outside of the pencils to help improve grip. Both Staedler and Faber Castell do (and in different manners), and this adds immeasurably to their performance characteristics.

5. The printing on the shaft of the Prismacolor to identify color name and code can be almost illegible, with blurry, imprecise lettering. In some lighting conditions, the markings are nearly impossible to read. (The newest editions of the Prismacolors seem to have addressed this, but don't count on getting those in the boxed sets anytime soon until existing stock is sold and replaced with new models.)

6. The Prismacolors are not "finished" on the end with any type of cap or closure, and the pencils also arrive unsharpened. (Compare the Faber Castells, which both come fully sharpened and are mounted in a manner that makes them resistant to any type of breakage during transport; these also, as most other brands, have a nice finishing cap on the end of the pencil.)

Let me be clear. These minor quibbles all fall away once you get one of these in your hand an experience how they perform. These are simply a delight to use, and many artists swear by them. After using them myself, I can see why. I still am extremely impressed with the best of the offerings Europe produces, but these Prismacolor pencils deserve to be counted right among them. If they ever addressed my minor quibbles above, they might vie for a role as a de facto standard with one or two of the other most expensive brands three times their price.

Five stars for performance. Five stars for price. Five stars for fun. And five stars for rich , creamy, deep color!

Note: Although these pencils come in many sizes of sets, I recommend the 72 color set. This gives you a wide range of colors, and does not run you into issues with the larger sets where you have multiple colors so close to one another you cannot easily see the difference. Of course, if you want the beautiful wood case, you'll need to get the 120 set.

Prismacolor pencils are well-known for their range in rich colors and vibrant laydown, setting them apart from any other type of colored pencil.

I've tried them myself and I agree. The lead is wonderfully soft, and therefore makes blending colors and pushing them into one another an ease to do.

The downside is that the lead is a little too soft, and makes it harder to get the colors smooth (it's easier to do with Crayola because Crayola has harder lead). It can be done, however, and these are great pencils that especially go well with Prismacolor markers. :)

Bought these for my son as he is into art/shading/sketching. These pencils are top quality and hold up. The lead is so thick that it does not break like most other art pencils. Great Value too.

I am sorry I bought this particular brand, they are not quality and so far every pencil I have used has broken color stick, it keeps falling out of the wood casing as you sharpen, either these were badly abused in transit or they just are not very well made.

These pencils are very nice... And the price is decent compared to how much they cost in Art stores... however when I opened the box, one of the pencils was cracked and the lead was broken. It really wasn't worth sending them back and waiting another 2 weeks to receive more. Heard this is the case a lot of times. Wish the company did a better job of making sure that all pencils are not cracked and delivered carefully.

O'Keeffe's Working Hands Cream

O'Keeffe's Working Hands Cream, 3.4 oz.
  • O'Keeffe's Working Hands is designed to effectively relieve dry hands that crack and split.
  • The odorless, concentrated formula stimulates the skin's natural repair process by hydrating the skin, adjusting pH balance, and retaining moisture.
  • It is chemically different than other hand care products.
  • A difference you will feel within days.
  • Safe for all skin types.

I get dry skin on my hands and feet compliments of my mother.. The type of work I did in my younger days didn't help matters any.

During my 20's and 30's it wasn't much of a problem, now at 47, the past few years have been the worst. Especially during the winter months.

After a horrible last year trying to make do with over the counter preparations, and even a wasted trip to a podiatrist or two, I decided to get serious about this problem.

So I did some research on the net and ordered all sorts of products, even spending a fair number of dollars down at the local Bath and body store, mostly for naught. Most of the products were either greasy, oily, has objectionable smells or just plain didn't work.

I narrowed it down to two products. Okeefe's and one of the beeswax type treatments.

Hands down this is the best product I've used on my hands, cheaper as well. And miraculously it contains no oil. In fact after application you'll be hard pressed to tell it's even there. But trust me, it is.

The beeswax stuff is a good product as well, and works quite well. But they must add mineral or some other type of oil to make the beeswax workable. If you had your hands in water all day, the beeswax product may last longer.. But for daily application in the majority of circumstances, I believe Okeefe's is the superior product. It's cheaper as well.. It uses a similar wax, a small amount of paraffin to seal in moisture, but it's much less noticeable and doesn't make your hands shine.

Whereas the beeswax product only seals in moisture, Okeefe's draws moisture to your hands and seals it in. So it's doing multiple things at the same time. Don't ask me to explain further, it just works.

For you folks that don't know how to apply a stiff cream like this out of a tub. It's real simple. Just scrape a small amount with the back of your thumb nail and place it on the back of your hand. Then rub the back of your hands together until its almost gone, then rub the rest into your palms and fingertips. You wont believe the hydration you feel immediately. And like I said in a few minutes you'll be hard pressed to tell there's anything there, until in a few days you notice your hands looks years younger and you've seen the end of cracked skin in the winter time.

Use it after you shower, after you wash dishes and before bedtime until your hands are healed.. Then once or twice a day.

After seeing the ad for O'Keeffe's hands cream on a page in Popular Mechanics, I initially thought the promise of fast healing for cracked fingers too fantatastic to be true. I dedided to take a chance anyway and after a fruitless search for it in local stores placed my order with Amazon. Mrs. Spudman had tried multiple products for her painfully cracked fingertips so we thought 7 dollars was a worthwhile gamble.

With some misgivings but no trepidation, Mrs. Spudman began using the new hand cream. We both did a visual inspection of her fingertips before beginning this trial so we could compare the effects (if any) of using the O'Keeffe's. After our finger inspection and evaluation of the width and depth of the cracks, Mrs. Spudman began using O'Keeffe's on her hands following the product directions.

Just so I could get into the act, I decided to experiment with the O'Keeffe's also on some painful cracks on the heels of my feet. Yes, I know this is a hand product, but I thought these nuisance cracks that only respond slowly to other products would be a good test. For five days so far I've used O'Keeffe's on the more painful heel and used Heel Rescue on the other heel.

On the hand the cream feels more silky than greasy. It is absorbed by the skin readily and makes them feel smooth.

Results:

Incredibly we've seen dramatic improvement on Mrs. Spudman's hands in only five days while she continues to use the O'Keeffe's daily. The cracks on her fingertips have closed and no new ones have appeared. If we hadn't seen this with our own eyes, we wouldn't believe it. Such an improvement seems too impossibly far-fetched. And yet.....

As for me the O'Keeffe's treated heel healed in only a few days. Though I've been using Heel Rescue on the other heel more frequently and more copiously, that heel is still a little tender though improved.

Conclusion: O'Keeffe's is the real deal. It has surpassed Udderly Smooth Udder Cream as Mrs. Spudman's new, favorite hand treatment.

This stuff rubs into your hands and takes just a few seconds to be all absorbed. It does feel a bit different than other creams; it took me a couple of applications to get used to that. At work I need to wash my hands with disinfectant soap several times an hour. My fingers get cracks and my skin gets horribly dried out. By applying the Working Hands morning, a couple times a day and at night before bed, the cracks were gone in a couple of days. I LOVE THIS STUFF!!!

My husband has suffered for over 30 years with dry chapped hands that crack and split and sometimes bleed at the finger tips....very painful. We have tried everything on the market, both OTC and prescription, with some relief but no true healing success. This cream is beyond fabulous. After only a 2-3 days we could see a real improvement and now after 7-10 days...his hands are totally healed....TOTALLY!!! No cracks, no bandages with neosporin needed. We recently ordered 3 more cans. It's really not any more expensive that the special healing creams you get at the drug store BUT the best recomendation...it works. My husband is just delighted. The best part, non-greasy, no nasty smell. If you have dry chapped hands that crack, split, bleed...this is for you!!

This product is amazing. It really works!!! I have tried so many different product for dry, chapped hands and those little cuts that pop up on my fingers, both over the counter and prescription types, but this has them all beat. It's not greasy at all which I really like and a little goes a long way. I'm still working on my first jar although I have two more jars in reserve. There is no odor, smell or anything associated with it which I also really like. The price is very good although I'd gladly pay more to make sure I'm never without it.

Tovolo King Cube Ice Trays

Tovolo KING Cube Ice Trays, BlueBig cubes are the latest trend in high-end cocktail bars because of their slower melt rate (less surface area) and curious look. This is a great home version that produces gorgeous 2x2 cubes. It does take a bit more effort to extract the cubes from the rubbery silicone material than traditional trays -you have to sort of stretch and push them out -but for big cubes it's actually advantageous to carefully slide them out this way, rather than "cracking" them out and risking fractures. You'll get the hang of it.

The BIG problem I had with this initially was that the cubes produced white "floaties" in the drink that left a rather waxy residue on the glass(!). I'm not making this up! What the heck are those? I googled it and it appears that this is a problem that some people experience with silicone trays. The best theory I found was that it's related to the effect silicone has on freezing certain types of water, perhaps condensing minerals on the surface of the cubes. It's just a theory. But I figured out a workaround which I am happy to share with the internet via this amazon review. If you experience this, just RINSE the cubes briefly before you drop them in the drink, and it will wash off the white reside. All good! I love my big cubes now.

We're cocktail nerds and have worked with the 4 cube size of this Tovolo king cube trays. As already noted, it's a bit of a fight getting the cubes out, but they are nice big cubes.

Our upgrade from this was to the big Beaba "cubes" which are actually cylinder sections with rounded bottoms. That makes them pop out a lot easier and the tray is lidded. Beaba thinks their tray is for freezing baby food, but we mixies know better.

We do recommend the smaller cubed Tovolo tray which freezes up fast and the cubes pop right out. In general, a brand we've liked; it'd be great to see them come up with a lidded tray with rounded "cubes" for easier removal.

Buy Tovolo King Cube Ice Trays Now

I bought two of these trays mainly to freeze cooking liquids (stocks, broths, wines, etc....) and they work just fine. Each cube is a little more than a 1/3 cup which is a pretty convenient size. After they are frozen the cubes don't slide out like a conventional hard plastic tray, but it's not really hard to get them out. I guess if you have a severe case of arthritis or carpel tunnel it might be an issue, but for most I'm sure it wouldn't be difficult. If you need big cubes get these trays!

My husband and I cook every day and entertain often but rarely use ice in our drinks. Nevertheless thought we would test this great looking ice cube tray for the summer cocktail season.

So the cubes looked great but by mid way through our vodka tonics we noticed a VERY odd taste ... maybe a bit like freezer burn?

Ok so we washed the tray again and refilled it with filtered water. The we popped out a couple of cubes in our water glass and again YUK!!! .. a horrid taste!

Thinking there might be something wrong with our freezer we went through all its contents to make sure everything was in good order . No problems! Then as an experiment we filled an old smaller tray borrowed from a friend and set it in the same spot in the freezer as the blue tray and left it for a week.

The old borrowed tray made perfect tasting ice cubes! So now we we're going crazy trying to figure out the taste problem. We did some further research and saw the recommendation here to clean the tray with a vinegar and water solution. Sadly, this didn't work either UGH!

Finally, we did what we should have done in the first place... we put the tray to our nose and guess what IT SMELLS RANCID, OLD and STALE. take your pick. Doesn't any one else taste/smell this?

We're throwing away $10 but definitely don't want to be freezing our water in this. It's supposed to be inert. right? If that's the case why the odor and why does it transfer a foul taste our water?

Really not sure what's going on with this product ... but it's a bit alarming. But then they say buyer beware. ...now we just need to figure out how to recycle it.

No kidding. I put a little bit of chili (not too chunky) etc in here, cover w/ saran wrap, freeze and then break out into a quart freezer bag. For lunch I can put a cube or two with some rice (etc) and fresh veggies. Nice little portion and it helps keep the other stuff cold until lunch time. This is nice for me because I don't always want the same food two days in a row.

Sterling Silver 16", 20" and 30" Box Chain Necklace (Set of Three)

Sterling Silver 16', 20' and 30' Box Chain Necklace, Set of ThreeI found that I have way too many pendants and not enough chains. I thought this set would be a cheap fix for always having to switch chains around. The price is astonishingly low, so how can I really complain?

BUT, they are really cheaply made. The chain itself is fine but the clasp is extremely small, and it's the circle type (not the claw style), which makes it awkward to put on. The soldering (is that what it's called) between the clasp and chain looks extremely weak.

For an occasional use, they may be fine. Or if you need some cheap gifts, these are all in separate baggies in one really nice box. Just don't give them to someone you really care about!

Honestly, when I saw the price for the cost of three, I wasn't expecting such a good product. But... I am extremely pleased! I loved the different lengths for versatility and I'm actually wearing one now! : It's a really great product for a great deal! I'm actually thinking about getting another set in silver and another in gold, if they have it. VERY HAPPY! :-)

I am very impressed with the look of these chains for the price. They look great when worn at the same time as they layer perfectly. Look great with or without charms. Cook's Illustrated (1-year auto-renewal)

Cook's IllustratedCooks Illustrated is like no other cooking magazine I have ever read. It's a sort of Consumers Reports for cooking, aimed at the beginning gourmand. The magazine includes recipes, tips sent in by readers, standard methods for important cooking procedures, reviews of gadgets or food items, and reviews of cookbooks. All of these are accompanied by beautiful black-and-white illustrations and photos of the foods and techniques used (which explains the "Illustrated" part of the magazine title).

My favorite articles are those that delve into the development of the recipe featured. These articles all provide a standard format of describing the "perfect" representation of the items and then the authors explain their process for creating their final recipes and the method by which to read and make the recipes. While this sounds scientific (and indeed, it is), the writing is delightful and down-to-earth, not dry or esoteric as other gourmet magazines. In addition, sidebar articles explore choosing particular ingredients or comparisons of different brands or gadgets relating to the recipe shown and give clear direction where the more elusive ingredients and gadgets can be purchased.

While I am not always confident that the recipes in other magazines or cookbooks have been tested, I am always certain that the recipes in Cooks Illustrated have been rigorously reviewed and have been designed to be made by the average cook, not trained culinary experts. If you are seeking a magazine that provides tried-and-true recipes for basic food items (ranging from Beef Stroganoff to Salade Nicoise), this is a perfect choice. It is obvious that this magazine is a work of love for its editors and writers. There are no advertisements, and the only color photos are on the inside of the back page of the magazine.

(At one time, Cooks Illustrated had a special featured area on Amazon.com. The articles posted there are still available on Amazon.com, but you have to dig. Search under the book The Best Recipe, click through to the book description, and under "Book Information" in the left column, click the Amazon.com articles link and explore from there. These articles are great--albeit more brief and non-illustrated--versions of the articles in the magazine.)

"Cook's Illustrated" serves as a mentor to me and others who refused to learn the art and science of cookery in the kitchens of their loved ones. I did take a home economics class in high school, but my main memory of it is my teacher's repeated iteration of "Oh mercy, Elaine. Mercy." It took a long diet of college jello and Spanish Rice, and then a marriage in which neither of us fathomed the mysteries of the kitchen to get me interested in the art of cooking for myself and others.

Most of the other magazines in the culinary market don't seem to cater to the cooking-challenged. For instance, the seemingly simple instruction "beat enough sugar into the meringue to stiffen it" caused me to set the oven on fire. I added cups and cups of sugar to my three egg whites and the darn meringue finally got grainy, which I figured was the equivalent of 'stiff.' Not so. Once enough heat was applied, the meringue flooded over the sides of the pie plate and set the oven ablaze. It was not easy explaining my culinary mishap to a sceptical fireman.

My inadvertent attempt at incendiarism wouldn't have happened if I had been following a recipe in "Cook's Illustrated." Here the recipes are lovingly detailed, and there diagrams on 'simple' techniques such as How to Slice an Onion. Most of you probably learned about such matters at your mother's knee, but I was more interested in Astronomy than Onions back in the good old days when someone cooked for me. As a consequence, I've been slicing onions incorrectly until the December 2004 "Cook's Illustrated" hit the newstand.

The contributors to this magazine test their recipes multiple times, varying the ingredients, using different cooking utensils, until they get what they consider to be the perfect outcome. For instance, in the article on "Balsamic Braised Chicken," John Olson writes: "At that point, I stopped my tests with the high-end vinegar. Simmering such a vinegar might well be considered high crime in Italy. All the time and effort expended to create its subtle flavor balance would be wasted, as boiling destroys it. (This is not a problem with the cheap stuff.)"

"Cook's Illustrated" recipes are adventures into a mysterious art, as well as producers of wonderful dishes. The editors don't accept advertisements, so you can trust their ingredient and product recommendations. If you are a fan of the show, "America's Test Kitchen" on public television, then you'll definitely love the magazine that details this program's favorite recipes. This is a good magazine for the home cook that wants to branch-out from the standard Family Circle or Good Housekeeping no risk recipes.

My BIG problem with this company is once they've got your contact information, you will receive more junk mail than you thought one company could generate; hawking every single publication they produce, relentlessly.

I stopped subscribing and it took a year to stop receiving their snail spam; and there's no way to 'opt out' online

This magazine series is an excellent source of information beyond the wonderful recipes and cooking tips. For each simple recipe, there is a story behind how the formula was derived. Each recipe is painstakingly prepared in a test kitchen to get the best results -with suggestions for alternative approaches.

The standard format is that each magazine has approximately ten good recipes plus some cooking gear/tips. Each recipe is given with a brief history, the trials in the kitchen and then the recipe/instructions/hints.

As an example, the editor goes into great detail about the perfect New York Cheesecake. He provides information about the impact of adding additional eggs or egg yolks, tips on making a graham cracker crust easier to fill the pan, and why cracks happen (and how to avoid them.) All of this was done as a learning process (I tried this and the result was... so I tried this and ...)

The recipes are all wonderful. I have yet to be unsuccessful with anything I have tried. You will find this magazine well worth the cost if you enjoy the process as much as the preparation.

However, if you are just looking for the best recipes, I would suggest skipping the subscription and buying the cookbooks from the "Best Recipe" series that the magazine editors have also published.

Cook's is an above average cooking magazine, don't get me wrong. Its format gets a bit stale after awhile, but the magazine itself is ok. The sales techniques used are what makes me give this a 1 star.

I had a representative of Cook's call me and ask me if I would like to buy their cookbook. I answered "no thank you". As a typical sales call, they continued their rehearsed sales techniques on how it would be worth it, told me if I didn't like it, I could simply send it back within 30 days. I restated my no thank you. He asked me why I wouldn't just try it and send it back if I didn't like it. I told him that I don't want to be hassled and I don't want to have to remember to return something in 30 days.

The Cook's Illustrated representative then began a personal attack on me, asking me how I manage to pay my bills on time if I'm that unresponsible. I was speechless. I was hoping that this was a one time thing a rogue employee on a bad day, but after googling the magazine, I'm afraid it is more par for the course.

Above average magazine, TERRIBLE sales techniques.

Generation Green (g2) Bottle Cutter

Generation Green Bottle CutterI purchased this product on Dec. 17 and it arrived Dec. 22, assembled it in about 5 minutes. Took it out to the shop along with an old coffee maker. Set up my bottle for the location of the cut. Set the cutter on its side so the bottle can rest on the lower guide and made a light score cut using only one turn of the bottle. Fired up the coffee pot with just water, poured the entire pot of hot water slowly over the score line. When the hot water was gone I quickly ran it under cold water on the score line and presto, a perfect break. The hot and cold water technique is the easiest for getting a smooth and great surface to finish up with sanding for use of the glass. I would recommend this to anyone who wants to cut bottles or jars, just remember to only make one pass and then use the hot and cold water method(very hot and very cold).

New to cutting bottles into glasses, I watched a handful of YouTube videos. This product seemed to appear user friendly. Operative word is "appear". The first issue was that after two attempts at scoring the bottle, the guide that goes into the top cracked to the point it was no longer effective. (nothing a band-aid of duct tape couldn't handle though). The second short coming is the hardware used to secure the vertical and horizontal parts of the jig. Because wine bottles have a varied design you will need to reset the jig in order to achieve a uniform glass height. The tiny wing nuts are "ok" but you will need a screwdriver to hold the head of the screw while you tighten the wingnuts. Not a big deal except the hardware is cheap so after a few adjustments the head of the screw is starting to round out. A better design would have been a stud or a nutplate. This would have made it less cumbersome to adjust and would allow you to tighten to ensure the jig doesn't move while scoring.

After a long "trial and error" period I have been able to use the jig as it is marketed. It's not quick to adjust and gets the "pain in the butt" stamp. Aside from making your own jig I didn't see anything else out there. One more thing, I didn't have any success with the hot water cold water technique to seperate the bottle. I did however purchase a bernzomatic hand held torch which has been 100% effective at ensuring enough heat is dispersed along the score line.

I would only recommend this item after you have exhausted your search for better. Good luck!

It does take a bit of skill to use, but the old lady cuts a wine bottle in about 10 min per cutting procedure (ie 10 min per cut), and they're perfect; seats perfectly on the table with very smooth edges when she's done. She's done about 8 now and loves it. Score glass, dunk in hot water, dunk in cold water, dunk dunk dunk and snap; pops apart clean! Use the provided glass-sanding sponge to smooth the edges. This is basically the same K-Tel type thing that has been for sale for 40 years. And I guess the reason it has been around that long is because it works, though there is a learning curve and you can't expect to get 100 percent success rate. I would put it together and then throw away the instructions because there is a better way.

Best Practices:

score once, not once and a half, not once and a quarter...as close to exactly once as possible. You are not trying to cut through the bottle, just create a fracture point. If you go around more than once you will likely increase the chances of spider cracks where you don't want them.

pour boiling water around the score and then run cold water on it. Repeat as needed. Forget that tapper thing, the bottle will just fall apart if you do the hot and cold right.

Thicker is better. I've had my best success with bigger thicker wine bottles; probably 80 percent. Most beer bottles are too thin and brittle so I barely have a 50 percent success rate.

I wish they had charged a little more and made this a little more beefy; the little wing nuts that have to tightened and loosened often are really flimsy; like you could bend them with your fingers without being a gorilla.

This was an entry level device for me. I eventually want to build a glass bottle wall and will likely get a tile wet-saw so I can do a couple hundred. If your recycling center is like mine, they will gladly let you take all the bottles you want.

I bought this to make wine bottle lights. I have cut flat glass before, but never wine bottles, so I followed the instructions to the letter. Hours later, I had one unevenly broken wine bottle and 5 others cut and unseparated...I was ready to drink a bottle of wine myself! Here's how I altered the instructions and it happened to work for me.

First, I laid the device on it's side, which helped me to get a smoother, much more even score.

Next, I figured out that using the tapper gave me uneven separation...just put it back in the box.

The directions state that you should alternately dunk the bottle in simmering and ice water 5 seconds in each. That didn't work at all for me. I let the wine bottle sit in the boiling water for more like 30 seconds, and then ice water for 30 seconds. In most cases, it only took one or two dunks for the bottles to separate. Much more successful....and WAY less frustrating!

Enjoy your projects!

Screen Protectors Compatible With Samsung Galaxy S2 (5 Pieces/Packs)

Screen Protectors Compatible With Samsung Galaxy S2 Epic 4G Touch D710-(5 Pieces/Packs)By far the worst thing I've ever purchased on Amazon. These screen protectors don't fit the screen; they only cover about 70% of it at best. They are NOT like the illustration shown. In a decade of protecting gadgets, I've never seen a screen protector scratch so easily. After applying it, a *microfiber cloth* left a haze of scratches. The device alone in my dress jacket pocket for one day ended up so scratched it looked like someone took a belt sander to the protector. It is now 3 days after I've applied it, and the protector is so badly hazed over with scratches I cannot clearly see the screen anymore. This product, and any seller who condones this should not be trusted with your business. Utter, complete, total garbage and waste of money.

It doesn't work for samsung galaxy s2 I don't even know why they say it works. I told them I want to return it and they want me to pay for the shipping, I paid for the junk to be shipped at my house and they didn't even have a coutesy to send me the return envelope. I didn't return it, it wasn't worth my time, I guess that's how they are making money and I hope no one buys anything from this seller. Worst exeperience I have ever had on amazon. I m surprised amazon still has this seller here inspite of all the reviews.

The other reviewers are correct....these DO NOT FIT SAMSUNG EPIC! Had I read the reviews, I would not have purchased this product for my Epic. They are also difficult to apply and difficult to clean. Not a product I would recomend.

These are crapy screen savers. When I opened the package and handled the product it seamed as though I had to cut them to fit my phone. This is the third time I ordered products that turn out to be what they are not. I have a collection of crapy products and phone covers that I purchased that do not fit my phone. I used the owners Manuel to make sure I get the name of the phone correct and still I receive products that are sitting in my junk drawer. If you order these screen covers be prepared to thow them in the garbage when they arrive.

Olympus ME-15 Microphone

Olympus ME-15 Microphone
  • Small and discreet tie-clip/collar microphone
  • Wide 100-12,000 Hz frequency response
  • 2.2 kOhm output impedance
  • 3.3-foot cord for added convenience
  • Weighs only 11 grams

I purchased this mircrophone with the Olympus WS-331 Digital Voice Recorder. The WS-331 is a great recorder, and the use of the external microphone makes it even better. I can simply clip the microphone to my lapel and it picks up my voice easily. The quality of recording is improved simply because I am not trying to hold the recorder steady in front of my while I dictate.

One of the best things about this microphone is that the connecting wire allows me to leave the recorder on my belt while keeping the microphone on my lapel. I've used this to record lectures for my students, and the quality of the recording is very good.

This made my digital voice recorder 10x better, it picked up the sound much clearer and from farther away. I use this for college and so sometimes i sit in the back and sometimes in the front but i couldn't use my Digital Voice recorder w/o this. Highly Recommened

I use this microphone with an Olympus WS-320M digital recorder. I am a Pastor/Evangelist and I use this combination to record my sermons when I am preaching away from my home church. In addition, I use it to record my lectures at the Bible college where I teach.

This microphone provides much better sound reproduction than the built in mics on the digital recorder. I can achieve some pretty decent recordings using this product.

Stop and notice the difference between icky sound and quality sound. Then do something about it. This mic is an inexpensive first step.

I use it for video reviews. A $100 "LDC" desk mic might be better, but I like this solution. You don't have to worry about: Turning your head away from the mic. Pop filters. Breath noise. Stands. Isolation mounts. Phantom voltage.

This "lavalier" style mic is typically plugged into a wireless system such as the Azden WMS-PRO Wireless Microphone System. But since I'm always recording from about 10 feet away, I prefer direct wiring. I use the very heavy duty Monoprice 15ft Premium 3.5mm Stereo Male to 3.5mm Stereo Female 22AWG Extension Cable (Gold Plated) Black.

Works with... Doesn't work with... -

The owner manual warns: "Do not use this microphone with any recorder that cannot supply power to an external microphone. If you are using this microphone with a recorder not made by Olympus, we cannot guarantee the specified sensitivity." Well, it would be nice if that was disclosed in the product description before purchase.

I'll guess they are not talking about the "48 volt phantom power" that larger condenser microphones require. I plugged this into the "Mic" input on my PC's sound card. It seemed to work fine after I set the Realtek Audio Manager's "Microphone Boost" to +10 dB. I don't know if it's working below par, but it seems to work pretty well (See video.)

It works fine with my Olympus WS-802 Voice Recorder.

It does NOT work with my Canon HF-M500 camcorder (directly connected). Apparently many camcorders require a battery powered mic such as the Audio-Technica ATR-3350 Lavalier Omnidirectional Condenser Microphone (or an energized interface).

PROs:

Good quality sound

Affordable

Easy to set up and use

Almost invisible (except for silver clip)

OKs:

You can easily paint or replace the silver "tie pin" clip

CONs:

Unclear what devices are fully compatible.

Olympus does not explain compatibility issues very well.

This is a very nice microphone. It really improves the quality of the sound especially when you don't want to show your recorder, you just plug in the microphone, put the recorder in your bag and just let the microphone outside to do its job. It comes with a clip that you can use for example to put the recorder in your pocket and attach the microphone to your shirt.
